OAKRIDGE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Overview:

Oakridge Elementary is an existing school located in Millcreek, Utah. The school is an inefficient and deteriorating facility that was constructed in the 1970s. It doesn’t meet the current needs of the local students and is not a landmark in the community.

Drawing from American Beaux-Arts architects like John Russell Pope and Horace Trumbauer, I decided on a classical design solution that incorporates efficient systems to comply with modern energy standards. The result is a monumental landmark that the community will cherish and enjoy for years to come.

The parti centers around a monumental Greek Doric portico, adorned with a statue of Athena, which ties the building to the school’s existing Olympian mascot. Two symmetrical wings extend from this portico, providing a courtyard as an extension of the indoor learning environment. Provided the weather is pleasant, students could take breaks in the courtyard, walk through the stoa, and enjoy the scenery. Students could also walk up the ramps to the belvedere and look out across the valley to learn about the local environment.
